At the start of the COVID19 pandemic, being stuck at the house with not much to do, I decided to try and get back into amine, after being away from it since my college days, when I watched Robotech, Star Blazers, and a couple others of that era.
Anime now days is so much better in the artwork, stories, and treatment of women. I tried re-watching Robotech and I couldn’t do it. Even tho the bridge crew in the first arc (Macross) are women in power, they still were not portrayed well, imo. Watching the original anime that Robotech was made from was even worse. Oh well, times, people, and attitudes change, thankfully. We’re all in this world together, and belittling, stereotyping or limiting others based upon the physical attributes gets us nowhere except misery-ville in the long run.
That said, here’s some of my favorite anime (meaning I’ve watched them multiple times) of the recent years, in no particular order (sorry for all the youtube links):
A Wild Last Boss Appeared!
Gamer dude gets isekai’ed as the overpowered lady character “last boss” he played in a game. But this new world isn’t quite the game, and the line between the “he” of the gamer and the “she” of his character slowly gets blurred. I hope there’s a second season. Also, opening song rocks.
I Left my A-Rank Party to Help My Former Students Reach the Dungeon Depths!
“Lowly” red mage quits his “A” ranked party after much abuse over being the weakest of them, and joins up with some students of his from an adventuring class. It’s a harem anime that’s light on the harem aspect in the sense that, yes, he’s the only dude in his party, but that’s not really the focus of the anime.
The Saint’s Magic Power is Omnipotent
Overworked office lady is summoned to another world during a ritual that summons a saint, but the summoning world got a two for one, and one of the two will protect the kingdom as the “Saint”. A sweet, slow burn romance with action, intrigue, and a well developed story.
Tsuskimichi – Moonlit Fantasy
Guy gets summoned by a goddess to another world, only to be cast aside because he’s ugly. Only beautiful heroes will do, ya know. Poor guy gets summoned, insulted by the goddess who summoned him, and tossed into the wastelands by said goddess, but not before an earth god grants him some blessings and powers. First season has a kick ass opening song
Onimai – I’m Now Your Sister
Okatu, agoraphobic older brother gets experimented on by his genius younger sister and turned into the older brother who is now the adorable little sister. Hilarity ensues. This one is a bit one the mature side, but nothing R-18. Japanese language trailer, because the English one is age restricted for some stupid reason
The Wrong Way to Use Healing Magic
Quiet, unassuming guy gets isekai’ed as a plus 1, when he gets caught up in a hero summoning that was targeting his classmate, and the student council president. While his classmates get the royal treatment, he gets the training from hell as a healer.
